And So It Begins

We leave in 2 days. Two days to finish moving out of our house, move in to the trailer and eat all the leftovers in the fridge. I'm not sure which of those is the most daunting. Needless to say, there's a lot of work to be done and we're trying not to freak out. We thought we purged all of the things, leaving only a minimal amount of stuff to move. But then we just keep finding more stuff. As soon as you think you packed all the toys, you find a plastic deer, a jewel, an egg shaker, three balls, and countless other things that now need their own box. Ugh. Trying to be a minimalist with three kids is hard.

You might be wondering why we decided to sell our house with an amazing yard (over an acre!), leave the city we love (Milwaukee!) and confine ourselves to a 32 ft travel trailer with our three kids. I promise you, we have thought this through. There are many reasons why we are embarking on this 9-month roadschooling adventure. They include (but aren't limited to) the following:

1. We want to spend more time together as a family
2. We want to travel and show our kids the world
3. We want to live a more minimalist lifestyle, unburdened by things
4. We want to live more in the moment and be less consumed with schedules and social engagements and to-do lists (ok, this last one is mostly for me)

We aren't so naive to think that being together 24/7 and living in a confined space won't have it's own set of problems. We know our kids won't magically stop bickering just because we are hiking in Yellowstone enjoying the fresh air. We know our two year old will still get into EVERYTHING. I know I will still have to-do lists. But we also know (or at least hope) that this will be a life changing experience for our family. And honestly, I'd rather my kids be bickering in the middle of a national park than in the living room on the couch. Because in the end, they will remember something about their day in a national park, whether it be the wildlife they saw or the cool rocks they found or the game of tag they played. I mean, they will...right?!

We hope you enjoy following us on this journey. We hope you laugh with us, cry with us, and if (I mean when) everything seems to be going wrong, we hope you laugh and cry with us. We plan on documenting both the good and the bad. The fun and the mundane. I'm sure there will be many times when we wonder what on earth we were thinking. But we think it's a risk worth taking for our kids education and well being. And if we're lucky, I bet Jared and I will learn a thing or two as well.
